Real Madrid plans a billion-dollar lawsuit against UEFA, as Super League plans have been blocked. Court sees EU competition violation.
The Court of Justice of the European Union (TJEU) decided, in December 2023, that the rules in force in 2021, used by the bodies governing football - UEFA and FIFA - to block Superlagi, contravenes the law of the European Union and constituted an abuse of dominant position on the market.
Twelve clubs had once planned the revolution: the Super League. The project failed. Later, the Madrid Regional Court saw a violation of EU competition rules at Uefa – that is what Real Madrid wants to use for itself. The club sees the basis for a compensation claim.
