Haryana, Rajasthan Seal Yamuna Water Deal After 32 Years; Amit Shah Witnesses Signing
The deal will send Rajasthan’s share through an underground pipeline during monsoon months, ending a 32-year delay in the 1994 water pact.
- On Monday, June 29, 2026, Haryana and Rajasthan signed an agreement to implement the 1994 Upper Yamuna River Board Agreement, enabling Rajasthan to access water from Hathnikund Barrage during monsoons.
- The 32-year-old pact remained unimplemented until now due to the absence of canal infrastructure that would allow Rajasthan to access its allocated share of the Yamuna River.
- Both states will jointly construct a 300-km underground pipeline estimated at Rs 3,900 crore, delivering 580 million cubic metres of water annually from July to October.
- The project secures reliable drinking water for water-stressed districts including Churu, Sikar, and Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan, plus Bhiwani and Fatehabad in Haryana, while recharging groundwater reserves.
- While Union Home Minister Amit Shah called the agreement a "win-win situation," opposition critics contend Haryana must first secure its full water share from Punjab before transferring resources to Rajasthan.
