Quebec will expand its pilot project regarding store opening hours on weekends
The pilot lets retailers open daily until 9 p.m. to compete with online sellers; a 45-day consultation will follow new draft rules, Economy Minister Samuel Poulin said.
- On Monday, Samuel Poulin, Minister Delegate for the Economy and Small and Medium Enterprises, announced Quebec will expand a retail-hours pilot province-wide, allowing stores to open 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., except on public holidays.
- For the past few weeks, a pilot project allowed local retailers in Gatineau, Laval and Saint‑Georges to stay open until 8 p.m. on weekends, relaxing the 5 p.m. closing rule.
- The draft regulation will enter a 45-day public consultation period, with food shops and pharmacies remaining exempt from changes.
- The government also proposes separate late hours for erotic product retailers, running a parallel pilot that lets erotic product stores remain open until 11 p.m. every day, and Poulin said Quebec must `get out of the way of entrepreneurs`.
- Extended hours aim to give local shops more flexibility against e-commerce competition, and if adopted province-wide, the change would reshape weekend and daily shopping for Quebec retailers and consumers across Quebec.
