Qld man’s waterfront mansion seized by police amid Bitcoin probe
- The Australian Federal Police seized a waterfront mansion, a luxury car, and nearly 25 Bitcoin from Queensland man Shane Stephen Duffy in July 2023 at Beachmere, Moreton Bay.
- The seizure followed a years-long AFP investigation, Operation Gouldian, launched in 2018 after Luxembourg authorities notified AUSTRAC about suspicious Bitcoin linked to Duffy.
- Duffy previously pleaded guilty in 2016 to fraud and computer hacking offenses related to selling inactive League of Legends player account details, earning just over $32,000 in 2013.
- The AFP said the seized assets, valued at $4.5 million, were taken on reasonable suspicion they were proceeds of crime and not consistent with Duffy's lawful income.
- Last month, the District Court ordered the assets forfeited to the Commonwealth, concluding Operation Gouldian and directing the proceeds toward community initiatives via the Commonwealth Confiscated Assets Account.
