Pune Airport Runway Shut After IAF Jet Crash-Lands; Over 80 IndiGo, Air India, SpiceJet Flights Cancelled
Airport officials said 31 arrivals and 34 departures were cancelled as crews cleared the runway and restored normal operations.
Pune International Airport resumed operations this morning following a temporary shutdown caused by an Indian Air Force fighter jet incident. Departure and arrival operations have now restarted.
After the aircraft suffered a "hard landing" Friday night, the runway became unavailable. Reports indicate the incident involved a landing gear failure, though the Indian Air Force confirmed the aircrew remained safe.
Flights were diverted to cities including Surat, Goa, Navi Mumbai, Chennai, and Coimbatore to manage the airport closure. The disruption led to cancellation of 31 arrivals of IndiGo.
Authorities worked with Air Force officials to remove the stranded aircraft and clear the runway. Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol confirmed the restoration, noting that safety remained the top priority during recovery efforts.
Pune International Airport operates under a dual-use model, handling both civilian flights and military operations, making coordination crucial during emergencies. Air traffic in Pune is expected to gradually return to normal throughout the day.
