Publicly owned Great British Railways with Derby HQ to be created officially in Parliament
Great British Railways will unify management of UK's rail network with a new app and stronger passenger watchdog, serving passengers, freight customers, and taxpayers.
- On Thursday, November 6 the Railways Bill will be laid in Parliament creating Great British Railways headquartered in Derby to unify passenger services and rail infrastructure.
- Amid persistent fragmentation in the rail network, over 17 organisations currently run the system, and ministers say the Bill aims to tackle delay, dysfunction and rising taxpayer subsidy.
- The Government will publish an Accessibility Roadmap on November 6 with commitments including expanded Disabled Persons Railcard eligibility, Welcome Points rollout, staff training and better lift and escalator maintenance.
- Business groups welcomed the UK Railways Bill, with Gratton noting it supports regional voices, and Ken Skates saying, `I very much welcome the introduction of the UK Railways Bill which will improve rail services and deliver a more integrated, accountable, and passenger-focused railway across the UK.`
- Rail unions warn that pay equalisation could push up costs and complicate subsidy savings, while Trainline's 18 million active UK passengers highlight competitive pricing challenges for GBR.
