Police investigate alleged assault after Enoch Burke confronts church leader
Police say the video shows Burke grabbing the archbishop’s arm and following him to his residence after a funeral service.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland launched an investigation on Thursday into a reported assault on Archbishop John McDowell at St Patrick's Church of Ireland Cathedral in Armagh. The Archbishop confirmed he would cooperate with authorities.
Enoch Burke has faced repeated imprisonment for breaching court orders regarding his dismissal from Wilson's Hospital School, which is under the patronage of the Church of Ireland. The dispute began in 2022 after Burke refused to use a student's pronouns.
During a funeral for the late Reverend Bill Atkins, Burke and family members confronted the Archbishop, with video showing Burke allegedly grabbing his arm. Burke branded McDowell a "traitor" on cathedral grounds.
Archbishop McDowell confirmed assistance with PSNI enquiries, while the Church of Ireland issued a statement expressing "deep concern and sadness" regarding the hostile confrontation on cathedral grounds. Police enquiries remain ongoing.
Burke continues to owe more than £238,000 in court fines arising from trespassing since the start of the school year in August. Police enquiries into the cathedral incident remain ongoing.
