Former Sheffield church leader and his wife charged with eight counts of rape
Police say the charges stem from alleged abuse reported years after the offences and are seeking information from former church members and others with relevant knowledge.
On October 29, 2026, South Yorkshire Police charged former church leader Stephen Timmis, 68, and his wife, Janet Timmis, 61, with eight counts of rape each following a report of non-recent sexual abuse.
Prosecutors allege the offenses occurred between May and September 2008 while Timmis served as a leader at The Crowded House church in Sheffield, approximately 18 years before the charging announcement.
South Yorkshire Police investigators believe former church members may hold relevant information regarding the case. They urge anyone with concerns to contact authorities by calling 101, noting "Anyone with information will be offered appropriate support as required."
Released on bail, the couple residing on Psalter Lane will appear at Sheffield Magistrates' Court on December 1, 2026, to address the unproven allegations.
Authorities clarify that the ongoing police appeal is a request for assistance rather than an indication of additional complainants. The proceedings represent initial steps for the serious allegations against defendants who remain presumed innocent.
