Viable Device in Package Delivered to Londonderry Hotel, Police Say
Police said the package led to a controlled explosion after evacuations, and forensic teams are examining the remnants.
On Tuesday, the Police Service of Northern Ireland confirmed a viable explosive device was delivered to a hotel in Ebrington Square, Londonderry, prompting immediate evacuation and a controlled explosion by Army bomb experts.
The alert, triggered shortly after 3 p.m., occurred near a Halloween fun fair where families and children were present, leading police to describe it as a 'reckless and targeted attack' causing significant disruption.
Stormont Justice Minister Naomi Long described the incident as 'abhorrent' and 'shameful,' stating the device was placed near families and young people celebrating Halloween with 'absolutely no regard' for the community.
The package was removed for forensic analysis as investigation continues. Durkan said, 'This is extremely traumatic for staff and those staying at the hotel,' as the incident disrupted the city's festive week.
Authorities are appealing for witnesses to call 101 as investigations continue. Foyle Assembly member Julie Middleton stated those responsible 'hold no regard for human life' or the city's desire for peace and prosperity.
