Met refers itself to police watchdog over handling of letter about Meghan's father

An internal review found the force did not alert overseas agencies about allegations in the letter and instead passed it to the Sussexes' office.

  • On Thursday, the Metropolitan Police voluntarily referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct over its handling of a 2019 letter containing allegations against Thomas Markle Sr, the Duchess of Sussex's father.
  • In 2019, the Fixated Threats Assessment Centre received the correspondence, which the author claimed concerned the Duchess's security; the Met admitted it lacked security information and instead detailed alleged offenses outside the United Kingdom.
  • Commander Adam Slonecki said the Met passed the letter to the office of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex 'for their awareness' instead of notifying overseas law enforcement, a decision now under IOPC scrutiny.
  • Separately, police in the Philippines obtained a search warrant for devices at Markle Sr's former home after his son Thomas Markle Jr reported finding alleged child sexual abuse images there.
  • Currently recovering in Florida, Markle Sr strongly denied the allegations, describing them as 'sick lies,' while the IOPC will now determine whether further action against the Met is warranted.
