Manitoba Premier Throws Down Fitness Challenge for Students
The challenge asks students to track personal activity goals and gives participating schools $10,000, officials said.
On Tuesday, Manitoba launched the provincewide Premier's Fitness Challenge, offering $10,000 to every participating school to support programming and equipment purchases.
This initiative builds on the province's new kindergarten to Grade 12 health curriculum, encouraging students to set and track personal physical activity goals throughout the year.
Premier Wab Kinew announced the program at Winnipeg's Kelvin High School, where construction is starting on a $10-million, 11,700-square-foot gymnasium and outdoor track.
Students who improve their baseline fitness by year-end receive a gym banner, as Kinew emphasized the goal is to "compete against who we were yesterday" rather than against peers.
Education Minister Tracy Schmidt confirmed this year's challenge is the first annual event, with specific program details being developed alongside administrators for release in the coming months.
