Manitoba premier calls for end of U.S. tariffs after Trump rebuked in midterms
Kinew says the election results give Canada leverage to push Washington to drop tariffs and rebuild trade ties.
On Wednesday, Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew called on U.S. leaders to remove tariffs on Canada and end the war with Iran following Democratic party midterm wins.
The Democratic party took control of both houses of Congress and flipped long-held Republican Senate seats, an outcome Kinew said showed Americans "absolutely dominating Trump" in Tuesday's vote.
Historic victories included Peggy Flanagan of Minnesota, the first Indigenous woman elected to the Senate; Deb Haaland, New Mexico's first Indigenous woman governor; and Abdul El-Sayed of Michigan, the first Muslim elected to the Senate.
Kinew stated that Canadians are ready to rebuild the relationship between the two countries and strengthen the economies of both, following the recent electoral shift.
While formal trade talks stalled in August, Prime Minister Mark Carney noted that official trade discussions between the two nations have occurred in recent days.
