Prospective UK PM Burnham Rules Out Early General Election
Burnham said he would keep Labour’s 2024 fiscal pledges and back electoral reform as he faced questions on Reddit and LBC.
On Friday, Andy Burnham, Britain's likely next prime minister, ruled out calling an early general election if he succeeds Keir Starmer, pledging to work to the 2024 Labour manifesto.
Burnham, the sole candidate to replace Starmer, who resigned as Labour leader and prime minister last month, is poised to take charge of the party and country later this month.
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch recently pressured Burnham to fund defense spending shortfalls or call an election, accusing him of answering "softball questions" during an online session.
In an interview with LBC's Andrew Marr on Thursday, Burnham pledged not to raise VAT, income tax, or national insurance, insisting he will not be "indisciplined" with public finances.
Participating in a Reddit "Ask Me Anything" session, Burnham confirmed he supports electoral reform for more collaborative politics and would "100%" maintain support for Ukraine, matching Starmer's previous commitments.
