Prosecutors: Suspect in shooting of two Minnesota state lawmakers had planned to target two others
- On early Saturday, Vance Luther Boelter allegedly shot and killed Minnesota lawmaker Melissa Hortman and her husband in their Brooklyn Park home and wounded Senator John Hoffman and his wife at their residence nine miles away.
- Boelter, who posed as a police officer and planned his attack carefully by researching and surveilling his targets, was pursued in the largest manhunt in Minnesota's history until his arrest Sunday evening.
- Authorities said Boelter also visited two other lawmakers' homes but did not carry out further violence as police intervened, preventing a larger planned attack.
- Boelter faces six federal charges including murder and stalking, some eligible for the death penalty, and is being held on a $5 million bond; Minnesota's acting US Attorney called the attacks 'the stuff of nightmares.'
- The shootings highlight increasing violent political extremism, prompting calls from officials to recommit to core democratic values and reject violence in political disagreements.
