Officer killed in gunman’s Pennsylvania hospital siege was felled by police fire, prosecutor says
- West York Patrolman Andrew Duarte died in the line of duty during a hospital siege involving gunman Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz at UPMC Memorial Hospital on February 22.
- The incident began after Ortiz, aged 49, brought weapons and zip ties to the hospital and threatened a female hostage following news of his partner's death.
- During the siege, officers fired 22 rounds from 9mm handguns, rifles, and a shotgun to stop Ortiz, who was holding the hostage at gunpoint and attempting to leave the ICU.
- Investigators found Duarte was killed by police shotgun fire that also fatally wounded Ortiz, while two other officers and the hostage sustained injuries during the confrontation.
- District Attorney Tim Barker praised the officers' sacrificial courage and said Duarte's actions allowed others in York County to remain safe as they gave their lives.
