Prosecutor asks Indiana State Police to investigate dog deaths in uncooled rear of truck

  • Prosecutors have requested an investigation into the deaths of eight dogs from heat-related injuries while being transported in an uncooled box truck. The dogs were traveling from O'Hare International Airport in Chicago to a training facility in Michigan. Several dogs were found dead and others suffering from heatstroke symptoms.
  • Jennifer Webber, executive director of the Humane Society of Hobart, encountered resistance when trying to gather facts for her investigation. She was told by the police officer in charge that the deaths were an accident and the owner would take care of it. The owner, who was driving the truck, used abusive language and refused to produce health certificates.
  • The Indiana State Police has now joined the investigation. The owner of the dogs is Mike McHenry, owner of FM K9, a company that supplies trained police dogs. Various animal rights organizations have called for an independent investigation, citing potential conflicts of interest involving the police department.
