Internal Haredi tensions soar as Netanyahu scrambles to keep coalition intact
As one ultra-Orthodox party leader shows willingness to accept sanctions on yeshiva students, rival factions accuse him of trading the community's values for political power: 'Dery is selling out the Torah world'
The crisis over the draft law seeps into the haredi sector and turns into an internal conflict • "Deri needs to appoint cronies, jobbers, dayanim, city rabbis, and therefore he must have the government survive in order to appoint the jobbers" • Edelstein's entourage estimates that following the meeting on the draft issue, it will be possible to remove the threat of elections, if there is another compromise from the haredi side
Torah Judaism came out against Shas, claiming that they agreed to impose personal sanctions that would not pass the rabbinical leadership. Shortly afterwards, Shas Chairman Deri responded with his own attack: "The allegations that were made are false and unfounded."
I asked myself for the thousandth time what is going through Netanyahu's mind, assuming everything is fine there, when he releases these hallucinations into the world. After all, he knows (I hope) the truth. After all, he remembers (one must hope) the facts.
The main bone of contention between the parties is the start date of the sanctions that will be imposed if and when the Haredi public does not reach the recruitment targets. Torah Judaism insists that according to rabbinical instruction, it is forbidden to agree to sanctions at all, not even softened and postponed ones, and accuses Deri of being willing to discuss imposing them "for jobs."
