Probe into care of man arrested after boy injured in crocodile enclosure
Norfolk County Council said a Section 42 safeguarding inquiry is underway as the man remains under review and the boy has had five surgeries.
On June 18, a three-year-old boy suffered serious injuries after being thrown into a crocodile enclosure at Johnsons zoo in Old Hurst, prompting Cambridgeshire Police to arrest a 30-year-old Norfolk man on suspicion of attempted murder.
Reportedly having learning difficulties, the suspect was on a trip with carers when the incident occurred; police noted he was not believed to have known the child and released him on bail until 18 September.
The boy remains in stable condition at Addenbrooke Hospital after undergoing five surgeries for his injuries, while Tracey Johnson, the zoo's co-owner, reportedly jumped into the enclosure to rescue the child.
Norfolk County Council has launched a Section 42 safeguarding inquiry under the Care Act to investigate the care provided to the suspect, and the Care Quality Commission is 'liaising with the organisations involved' regarding potential regulatory action.
The Care Quality Commission is conducting an assessment of the registered care provider involved, stating it will use regulatory powers to maintain safety as officials continue coordinating with partner agencies to advance their safeguarding investigation.
