WB: Fresh ED Raids in Case Against Sona Pappu, Ex Kolkata Police Deputy Commissioner

Investigators are probing alleged land grabs, extortion and a wider financial network after seizing documents, digital devices and over Rs 2 crore in cash.

  • On Friday, the Enforcement Directorate conducted fresh searches at nine premises across West Bengal, expanding a money laundering probe linked to arrested former Kolkata Police Deputy Commissioner Shantanu Sinha Biswas and alleged criminal Biswajit Poddar, known as Sona Pappu.
  • Investigators initiated the operation following the arrests of Biswas last week and Poddar on Monday after a nine-hour interrogation. The ED alleges Poddar, a "history sheeter," used intimidation to acquire others' land at throwaway prices.
  • Searches targeted nine locations, including premises in Kasba, Chakraberia, Royd Street, and Murshidabad. Officials examined sites linked to Biswas' nephew Saurav Adhikari, Mohammad Ali, and Kolkata Police Sub-Inspector Ruhil Amin Ali, a "close associate" of the former officer.
  • At Biswas' ancestral home in Kandi, investigators broke open locked doors to conduct searches after receiving no response. The team is scrutinizing documents, digital devices, and financial records to uncover broader illegal networks.
  • The ED continues to probe alleged extortion activities, illegal land transactions, and financial irregularities involving police officials and business associates. A court remanded Poddar to custody until May 28, rejecting his bail plea as the investigation intensifies.
