Prince William Says UK Faces Terrifying Risk of More Wildfires Due to Climate Change
The Prince of Wales said climate change and limited aerial firefighting capacity make future wildfires a “terrifying prospect,” after a record season of 1,350 blazes.
Prince William visited frontline fire crews in Treherbert recently, warning that the prospect of more UK wildfires due to climate change is "terrifying" and praising their "gargantuan" effort.
The National Fire Chiefs Council reported a record 1,350 significant wildfires across England and Wales in 2026, more than 1,000 higher than 2024, prompting concern at the highest levels.
Military support proved vital in August, with 200 members of the Queen's Own Gurkha Logistic Regiment deployed to supply 2.1 million litres of water, while staff at Penyrenglyn provided round-the-clock assistance.
The government recently announced plans to equip RAF Chinook helicopters and A400M aircraft for firefighting, addressing gaps William identified as areas the country is "lacking."
Aled Bound, crew manager at Maesteg fire station, described 2026 as the "hardest wildfire season" he has faced, while William warned this is something the country must "have to live with.
