Suzuki Utilises BYD's Battery to Launch Japan’s Most Affordable Kei-Car EV
Suzuki said the kei EV uses BYD-supplied batteries and a dedicated platform to cut costs and deliver a class-leading 310 km range.
- On November 16, Suzuki will launch the e-Sky, its first passenger kei-car EV, with a starting price of around 2.12 million yen to undercut the BYD Racco as Japan's most affordable electric mini vehicle.
- To keep costs low, Suzuki collaborated with BYD, utilizing the Chinese company's LFP battery technology while building the e-Sky on a dedicated EV platform with a proprietary e-Axle drive system.
- The 1,030 kg vehicle offers a WLTC driving range of up to 310 km and features a class-leading AC energy consumption rating of 97 Wh/km, positioning it as an efficient alternative to the heavier BYD Racco.
- With Japanese government subsidies of 568,000 yen, the effective purchase price drops to 1.55 million yen, undercutting the Nissan Sakura and BYD Racco even without subsidies by 20,000 yen.
- While Suzuki has long dominated the Japanese kei-car market, this launch marks its formal entry into the electric segment, with the company aiming for a combined monthly sales volume of 1,000 units across three trims.
