President Xi says India, China ‘friends, partners’ in Republic Day message

On Monday, Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory message to President Droupadi Murmu on India’s 77th Republic Day, describing China and India as good neighbours, friends and partners, Xinhua reported.
Following resumed contacts last year, a series of high-level meetings, including Modi–Xi talks, helped improve relations alongside direct flights resumed in 2025 and visa rule easing.
Xi urged both countries to expand exchanges, increase cooperation and address mutual concerns, saying ties have improved over the past twelve months, vital for maintaining and promoting global peace and prosperity.
On Republic Day, the message signals a push to stabilise relations after years of friction along the disputed 3,800 km India-China border and the 2020 Galwan clash that killed 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers.
U.S. leaders including U.S. President Donald Trump and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio extended Republic Day greetings, the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi shared a Modi–Trump photo, and EU chiefs Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa attended the Kartavya Path parade.
