Cuba says crews repaired a large power plant that caused a massive outage
Only 1,000 megawatts, less than half the island’s demand, were available after repairs at the Antonio Guiteras plant restored partial power following the blackout.
- Cuban officials said crews repaired a broken boiler at the Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric plant that caused the outage on Wednesday, and Felix Estrada Rodríguez said the plant should operate by Saturday afternoon.
- The outage, which was the second in three months, was blamed on a crumbling electric grid and a lack of fuel affecting western Cuba.
- Repairing the boiler required slow, safety-focused work, Estrada Rodríguez said, while repair crews worked inside a confined space with very high temperatures.
- Cuba's Electric Union said only 1,000 megawatts were available, less than half the island's demand, and it did not specify how many customers remained without power.
- Cuba, which imports most of its oil from Venezuela, recently implemented austere fuel-saving measures after the U.S. attacked Venezuela and halted critical oil shipments, while U.S. President Donald Trump warned of tariffs on oil suppliers.
