Power restored to 800,000 in Kyiv after major Russian strikes on Ukraine’s energy grid

  • On October 11, utility workers restored power to more than 800,000 Kyiv residents after Friday's strikes plunged much of the capital into darkness.
  • Russian forces used Kinzhal hypersonic missiles and strike drones against Ukraine's energy infrastructure, and officials say Russia has repeatedly tried to cripple the power grid ahead of winter.
  • DTEK reported it had restored an additional 153,000 families by 4:00 p.m. Friday and earlier restored power to 270,000 Kyiv consumers, but warned localized outages remain.
  • The strikes killed two people and wounded at least 20 nationwide, utility and emergency workers suffered casualties, and Kyiv surface transport resumed operations after the outages.
  • President Zelenskyy warned `It is precisely the civilian and energy infrastructure that is the main target of Russia's strikes ahead of the heating season` as Britain, France, and Germany pledged to use frozen Russian assets with the U.S. to support Ukraine.
