Poundland owner seeking jobs-saving solution for UK discounter
Gordon Brothers says active talks with buyers and ministers aim to protect jobs and keep more than 600 stores trading.
Following a notice of intention to appoint administrators filed last week, Gordon Brothers is actively seeking a rescue solution for the British discount retailer Poundland to preserve jobs.
Gordon Brothers purchased Poundland last year for £1 from Warsaw-listed Pepco Group, but the business operating more than 600 stores in Britain and Ireland remains 'challenged and vulnerable.'
Prime Minister Andy Burnham met executives on Wednesday, urging them to 'focus on the people in your employment' and meet the Business Secretary to find a 'practical solution.'
The retailer has 10 working days from last week's filing to secure a rescue deal before entering insolvency, with roughly 11,000 workers facing employment uncertainty.
Advisers continue 'active discussions' with interested parties to protect jobs, while the Government remains 'prepared to find what we can do' to assist the retailer operating in Makerfield.
