HAIL MARY, FULL OF GRACE
- On May 20, 2025, Pope Leo XIV made a pilgrimage to the basilica situated outside Rome that houses the tomb of St. Paul the Apostle, where he was greeted by the church’s leaders and the Benedictine monks who oversee the site.
- The visit served to entrust the beginning of Pope Leo XIV's pontificate to the intercession of St. Paul and preceded his homily focusing on grace, faith, and justification delivered before nearly 2,000 faithful gathered inside the basilica.
- Pope Leo XIV entered through the Holy Door accompanied by chants from the Sistine Chapel choir and Benedictine monks, venerated the tomb with silent prayer, quoted St. Augustine to recall God’s prior love calling him to ministry, and knelt again at the altar above the tomb.
- He described salvation as arising from a “mysterious interplay of grace and faith” and recalled Pope Benedict XVI’s words that “God loves us,” concluding with a plea for grace to respond faithfully to God’s call and to become witnesses of charity.
- This visit and homily reflect Pope Leo XIV’s dedication to apostolic mission and highlight the emphasis on charity and faith as central to his pontificate’s beginning.
