New Bishop of Catholic Diocese of Rochester Introduced to the Public
Bonnici, 60, will become the 10th bishop of Rochester, succeeding Matano who apologized to abuse survivors and led since 2014, with installation set for March 19, 2026.

- Under church rules, bishops must submit resignation papers at 75, and Bishop Salvatore Matano, 79, submitted his in 2021 as he was about to turn 75.
- Matano apologized sincerely to survivors of sexual abuse, while hundreds accepted a $246 million settlement in the diocese bankruptcy case.
- Matano called Bonnici an outstanding bishop and shepherd and said Rochester has received a great gift, while Bonnici expressed gratitude for the warm welcome and plans to work with area faith and civic leaders.
- Bonnici will be installed on March 19, 2026, after serving as an auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of New York since 2022 and becoming Rochester's 10th bishop.
