Pope Leo to Visit Angola as Part of an Africa Tour, Vatican Envoy Says
Pope Leo accepted Angola's invitation for a 2026 Africa tour stop, marking a potential first overseas trip that year, Vatican sources said.
- Tuesday, Archbishop Kryspin Dubiel told journalists in Luanda `The Holy Father has accepted the invitation & we are currently in the process of preparing the plan and programme` for an Angola visit.
- Earlier this month Leo said he hopes to visit Algeria this year as part of an African trip, and in December he said he wished to visit Africa but did not name Angola.
- So far Leo has made only one overseas trip, visiting Turkey and Lebanon in November and December, while Pope Benedict XVI last visited Angola in 2009.
- The Vatican press office did not immediately respond, and officials say itinerary details will be communicated soon as they prepare the plan and programme.
- Angola is 44 percent Catholic and 35 percent Protestant, and Leo is also expected to visit Spain and the Canary Islands, a major migrant entry point.
