Pope Leo spent peaceful night in hospital after surgery, Vatican says
Surgeons removed the entire lower lobe of his right lung after tests confirmed lung adenocarcinoma, and the Vatican expects a weeklong recovery.
On Wednesday, the Vatican reported Pope Leo spent a peaceful night at Rome's Gemelli Hospital after surgeons removed the lower lobe of his right lung to treat lung adenocarcinoma during a 90-minute operation completed without complications.
Doctors discovered the growth during a recent routine health check, prompting the 71-year-old pontiff's admission to Gemelli Hospital where lead surgeon Stefano Margaritora and physician Luigi Carbone performed the operation late on Tuesday.
Removing the entire lower lobe of the right lung was necessary to excise all cancerous tissue, a significant anatomical intervention since human lungs contain five lobes—three in the right and two in the left.
The Vatican stated the pope is expected to remain in hospital for about a week, with all public engagements canceled until October 20 as he undergoes recovery.
Missing information regarding the tumour's size and whether the disease spread to nearby lymph nodes complicates long-term prognosis for the Church leader, according to official briefings.
