In a statement issued on Saturday 7 June, the European Union regretted the adoption of a law on foreign agents, which might "restrict civil society" in El Salvador. It also deplored the "recent arrests of human rights defenders".

A law on "foreign agents" promoted by President Nayib Bukele entered into force in El Salvador on Saturday, despite criticisms by the oeneges denouncing the institutionalization of the "persecution" against them. Adopted on May 20 by the Congress dominated by the ruling party, it is a similar norm to those in Russia, Venezuela and Nicaragua to prevent the work of the oeneges, and establishes a tax of 30% on the donations they receive.
