A resident on May 16 called the Westlake Police Department to report an attempted online fraud. The caller, a 68-year-old man, said that his computer had frozen with a pop-up screen several days earlier, and he called the telephone number on the screen for technical support. The man believed that he was talking with a Microsoft technician, who said he was transferring the call to the Federal Trade Commission.
