Police officer spared jail after being found drunk in marked car on duty

  • On January 17, Lauren Payne, a 26-year-old police constable from The Shires, Grateley, was found intoxicated in her marked Ford Focus at Popham Services on the A303 while in full uniform and on duty.
  • Payne, who was on duty from 7am to 5pm and returning from an assignment in Hart and Rushmoor, failed to respond to a call from her sergeant to return to Andover police station, prompting concerned colleagues to discover her slumped in her car.
  • A breath test revealed Payne had 123mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath, far exceeding the legal limit of 35mg, and a near-empty bottle of gin was found in her bag.
  • Payne, who had a history of mental health issues including anxiety, OCD, anorexia, and alcoholism, had been sober until January 11, when a collision with a deer caused her car to be written off and triggered a relapse; she wanted her background shared to help others.
  • On April 1, Payne pleaded guilty and received a 10-week prison sentence suspended for 12 months, must complete 15 days of rehabilitation and 150 hours of unpaid work, is subject to alcohol abstinence monitoring until July 30, must pay £85 in court costs and a £254 surcharge, and has had her driving licence revoked for 30 months; she was also sacked from Hampshire Police and placed on the College of Policing's Barred List for five years.
