Nottingham attacks NHS trust faces manslaughter investigation
Northumbria Police says the trust could face corporate manslaughter charges after reviews found repeated failures in Calocane’s care.
- Northumbria Police has launched a corporate manslaughter investigation into Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust regarding Valdo Calocane's care, acting on behalf of Nottinghamshire Police, which recused itself due to its own involvement in the case.
- Calocane, a paranoid schizophrenic, fatally stabbed Barnaby Webber, Grace Malley-Kumar, and Ian Coates on June 13, 2023. Reviews revealed the trust failed to assess risks, monitor medication, and recklessly discharged him despite knowing he was dangerous.
- Corporate manslaughter applies when a "gross breach" of duty contributes to death, carrying potential unlimited fines. Nottinghamshire Healthcare is now the second NHS trust in the county under investigation, following a probe into maternity deaths.
- Emma Webber, mother of Barnaby Webber, stated the investigation signifies "the beginning of the reckoning," describing it as an unprecedented move sending "much-needed shockwaves across our public services."
- The trust confirmed it is "co-operating fully" with the investigation, while the ongoing Statutory Inquiry chaired by Her Honour Deborah Taylor continues to hear submissions, with final findings expected next year.
