Poland signs contract to buy more South Korean battle tanks
POLAND, AUG 3 – The $6.5 billion contract includes 61 tanks to be produced domestically, aiming to boost Poland's defense industry and establish it as a main European tank production hub.
- On Aug. 1, 2025, Poland signed a $6.5 billion contract with Hyundai Rotem to deliver 180 K2 tanks for the Polish Armed Forces.
- Following the 2022 framework deal with Seoul, Poland accelerates tank expansion in the aftermath of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, deepening defense ties.
- Deliveries include 116 K2GF tanks between 2026 and 2027, followed by 64 K2PL tanks between 2028 and 2030, and 81 support vehicles between 2029 and 2031, all at Bumar-Aab'dy, Hyundai Rotem will equip the plant with machinery and transfer technology for a K2PL assembly line.
- The deal positions Poland to become a main European tank production hub, with Bumar-Aab'dy transitioning to manufacturing, enhancing industrial autonomy for Poland's land forces.
- This expansion positions Poland to operate around 1,100 tanks by 2030, surpassing Germany, France, the UK and Italy combined.
