- On May 2, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala, marking the launch of India’s first dedicated transshipment facility designed for deep-sea shipping.
- The commissioning followed years of construction under a public-private partnership with the Adani Group and Kerala government majority stake.
- The all-weather port features 30 berths, a natural 20-meter depth allowing ultra-large container ships, and strategic proximity about 10 nautical miles from east-west shipping routes.
- Since commencing commercial activity in December 2024, the port has processed a total of 285 vessels and moved approximately 548,000 TEUs. It currently employs 755 individuals, predominantly local residents, including a group of women from the fishing community who operate large automated cranes.
- Vizhinjam is expected to boost India's maritime trade, reduce dependence on foreign ports, enhance logistics efficiency, and foster regional economic development.
