First Canadian firm awarded contract under SAFE agreement, Carney says
The $10 million deal makes Marconi the first Canadian company to win a SAFE contract and adds Poland as a new customer.
On Monday, June 15, 2026, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced at the G7 Leaders Summit in Evian-les-Bains, France, that Montreal-based Marconi Technologies became the first Canadian company to win a contract under the SAFE defence agreement.
Canada is the only non-European country in the SAFE defence procurement pact, a 150-billion euro program designed to reduce the continent's military reliance on the United States through preferential access to low-interest loans.
Marconi Technologies will partner with Polish company Enamor International to supply tactical radios made in Canada, with the contract worth more than $10 million and deliveries expected through 2030.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa met with Carney at the summit, with von der Leyen stating that Canada and the European Union have "never been closer."
Carney also announced Canada and France will deepen industrial cooperation through a new security agreement, ahead of the next Canada-EU Summit scheduled for October.
