GMP issue statement on Man City guilty verdict as Andy Burnham speaks out
Burnham praised the owners’ investment in Manchester and said the club should be allowed to contest the ruling as appeal proceedings continue.
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Andy Burnham said he would be "really concerned" if Manchester City's owners sold the club following the guilty verdict for breaching Premier League financial rules.
An independent commission concluded City "clearly intended to circumvent Premier League rules" by inflating revenue and hiding costs through "sham" commercial deals over a nine-season period.
The Premier League said City used "sham" commercial contracts to inflate revenue and understate costs by more than £900 million over nearly a decade; City called the decision "unsafe."
Regulatory scrutiny intensified after the Independent Football Regulator said the ruling "raises serious issues" and could assess owner suitability or strip their license to own the club.
Burnham stated he is "not getting directly involved in the process," citing his experience with Everton's previous financial rule battles while emphasizing the case must play its course.
The verdicts in the cheating scandal are yet to be handed down, but demands are getting tougher. Premier Andy Burnham stresses that City's owners have invested hugely in Manchester.
