Plex Admits Breach of Account Details, Hashed Passwords

Plex suffered a data breach exposing user emails and hashed passwords; the company urges password resets and two-factor authentication after fixing the vulnerability.

  • In August 2022, Plex experienced a security incident where an unauthorized individual gained access to a portion of customer information, including account credentials and login details.
  • The breach resulted from an unauthorized third party accessing one of Plex's databases, and it was almost identical to a previous attack.
  • Plex quickly contained the incident, addressed the breach method, and advised all users to reset passwords at plex.tv/reset with device sign-out options enabled.
  • Plex stated that passwords were securely hashed and inaccessible to unauthorized parties, no credit card information was compromised, and reported that the proportion of environments with compromised passwords increased to 46%, almost twice the 25% recorded the previous year.
  • Plex is conducting additional security reviews, urging users to enable two-factor authentication, and stressing it will never request passwords or payment details via email to prevent future attacks.
