- The visit aims to finalize an interim agreement after months of negotiations on the India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement. Both nations previously agreed in February on lower reciprocal tariffs of 18 per cent for Indian goods.
- Tensions persist over India's Russian oil purchases, which could trigger tariffs under the Lindsey Graham Act, while a Section 301 probe into excess capacity remains underway. India maintains oil imports are essential for energy security.
- Federation of Indian Export Organisations Chief Executive Ajay Sahai expressed hope for clarity but noted uncertainty remains. He stated that any concrete outcome depends on Washington devising a mechanism to ensure competitive tariffs for Indian goods.
- Separately, the U.S. Trade Representative has already imposed a 10 per cent additional tariff on Indian goods following a forced labor investigation. Greer will address forced labor and supply chain issues during the broader G20 trade ministerial agenda.
