Tallinn's Pirita Beach Tests Positive for Blue-Green Algae

The Health Board detected both non-toxic and toxic species of blue-green algae in water samples taken Wednesday at the Pirita beach swimming area.

Blue-green algae, or cyanobacteria, have been observed in several bathing areas in Tallinn and Harju County in recent days. Reports have come from, among others, the Laulasmaa area, Haabneeme beach in Viimsi, and other beaches near Tallinn. The Health Board recommends that bathers carefully assess the condition of the water before going into the water and refrain from swimming if in doubt.
