Brazil’s Bolsonaro echoes Trump by describing coup plot trial as a ‘witch hunt’
BRAZIL, JUL 16 – Brazil's chief prosecutor seeks conviction of Bolsonaro and 33 others for armed criminal organization and coup attempt, with potential sentences exceeding 30 years, prosecutor says.
- On Monday, July 14, Prosecutor-General Paulo Gonet addressed Brazil’s Supreme Court, asserting systematic insurrection and recalling February charges against Bolsonaro.
- Prosecutors cite Bolsonaro’s 2019-2022 defiance of Brazil’s judicial system and his nostalgia for Brazil’s past dictatorship as causes of the armed plot accusations.
- Meanwhile, Brazil’s Supreme Court president, Justice Luís Roberto Barroso, said the US “sanctions” are based on “an inaccurate understanding” of events, while Lula insisted “no one is above the law.”
- At a session of Poder360, Jair Bolsonaro said “It's not about imprisoning me; they want to eliminate me”, his defense team vehemently denied the charges, and he labeled the trial a “witch hunt.”
- The trial is expected to take place in September this year, and if convicted, Bolsonaro and his co-defendants could face up to 40 years in prison.
