Pentagon says it is deploying California National Guard to Portland
The Pentagon reassigned 200 federalized California National Guard troops to Portland after a judge blocked Oregon's deployment, amid disputes over the necessity and legality of the move.
- On Sunday, President Donald Trump ordered 300 California National Guard members to Portland, Oregon, and the White House said they were sent to protect federal assets after violent unrest at an immigration facility.
- U.S. District Judge Karin Immergut wrote in her ruling Saturday that protests were not significantly violent, and Oregon and Portland filed suit on September 28 after Trump ordered 200 Oregon National Guard troops under Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth on September 27.
- Sometime after midnight early Sunday, 101 troops arrived at the Portland Air National Guard base, with another 99 California National Guard members due later to support U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
- California Governor Gavin Newsom vowed to take legal action and pledged to fight the deployment, while Oregon Governor Tina Kotek and Portland Mayor Keith Wilson said protests were small and are seeking legal means, with Kotek stating, `There is no need for military intervention in Oregon`.
- The federal government asked the appellate court for a ruling sometime Monday on its motion to stay U.S. District Judge Karin Immergut's order and notified the California Military Department of a federalization extension through Jan. 31, 2026.
