PennDOT issues travel restrictions ahead of Sunday's winter storm
Tier 1 restrictions ban several vehicle types and reduce speeds to 45 mph as up to 9 inches of snow threaten hazardous travel, PennDOT said.
- Starting at 3 p.m. Sunday, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission announced Tier 1 vehicle restrictions on major Pennsylvania interstates and Turnpike segments to limit travel during the nor'easter.
- With a powerful nor'easter taking shape, forecasters said it could drop up to 9 inches of snow in Lancaster County on Sunday and snowfall rates could exceed more than an inch per hour.
- PennDOT listed the vehicle types barred under Tier 1 restrictions, including tractors without trailers and enclosed unloaded cargo delivery trucks/box trucks, covering I-76 from Carlisle to New Jersey I-78 and the PA Turnpike Northeast Extension I-476 entire length.
- State officials urged motorists to avoid unnecessary travel and warned additional restrictions could be imposed Sunday, including a 45 miles per hour speed limit during vehicle restrictions.
- If travel is unavoidable, PennDOT advised drivers to use headlights, run defrosters and wipers, keep windows and mirrors clear, turn on hazard lights in squalls, increase following distance, and prepare an emergency kit.
