Major Parking Company Investigated for Potential Unfair Fines for UK Drivers
The regulator said some motorists were ticketed within five minutes of entering and that unfair charges were not always cancelled after appeals.
The Competition and Markets Authority launched an investigation into Euro Car Parks, which manages more than 3,000 parking locations across the UK and Ireland, focusing on potentially unfair charges at petrol forecourts.
Motorists have faced penalties for simply waiting in queues for fuel or car washes, prompting the CMA to scrutinize whether such charges breach consumer protection law and the company's broader appeals process.
Recent analysis shows drivers in Britain receive nearly 48,000 private parking tickets daily at costs up to £100 per charge; some 13.1 million tickets were issued during the final nine months of last year.
On Thursday, the CMA published an open letter to all private parking operators urging compliance review, while the British Parking Association and Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government welcomed the regulatory action.
Advocacy groups including the RAC and AA welcomed the crackdown, though concerns remain that a potential cabinet reshuffle next week could further delay the Private Parking Code.
