Paramilitary forces drone strike kills 5 near Sudan capital, rights group says
Emergency Lawyers said the attack hit a civilian vehicle and reflected a continued pattern of strikes on public roads.
- On Saturday, a Rapid Support Forces drone strike killed five civilians in Khartoum, according to the NGO Emergency Lawyers. The attack marks the second such incident in the capital within a week.
- The strike follows months of relative calm in Khartoum after Sudanese government forces regained control last year. Last Tuesday, a drone hit a hospital in the Jebel Awliya area, about 40 kilometres south of central Khartoum.
- Emergency Lawyers reported the drone struck a civilian vehicle on the Jammouiya Triangle road in southern Omdurman on Saturday. The vehicle traveled from the Sheikh al-Siddiq area in White Nile state, about 90 kilometres south of Khartoum.
- United Nations figures indicate nearly 700 civilians were killed in drone strikes during the first three months of this year. The RSF has largely concentrated recent fighting in the western Darfur region and Kordofan.
- Now in its fourth year, the conflict has displaced around 14 million people and killed above 200,000. Violence has also spread to the Blue Nile state, raising concerns the war could become more drawn-out and fragmented.
