Fire Breaks Out at Pemex's Dos Bocas Refinery, the Second Since March
Pemex said no injuries were reported and emergency crews responded as social media footage showed heavy smoke and a large fireball.
- A fire erupted Thursday at a petroleum coke warehouse at Pemex's Dos Bocas refinery in southern Mexico, marking the second blaze at the site in less than a month.
- The Olmeca refinery is a $21 billion flagship project of former President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador designed to reduce Mexico's dependence on imported fuel, though it has faced operational issues since opening in 2024.
- In January, the refinery produced 205,000 barrels per day of crude oil, alongside 77,520 barrels of gasoline and 78,500 barrels of diesel daily, demonstrating significant operational capacity before Thursday's incident.
- This incident follows a March 17 fire where 'oily waters' ignited around the refinery's perimeter, Pemex said, resulting in five fatalities and highlighting persistent safety challenges at the complex.
- Despite initial goals of ensuring 'energy sovereignty,' recent operational failures demonstrate the difficulties stabilizing the $21 billion project intended to strengthen Mexico's fuel independence and reduce imported energy reliance.
