Panda Express Adds Taiwanese Popcorn Chicken to Menu in 70 Locations
The limited-time item pairs Taiwanese street-food flavors with Panda Express’s standard bowl, plate and family meal options at no extra charge.
Beginning Wednesday, Sept. 9, Panda Express launched a regional test of Taiwanese Popcorn Chicken across seven states, blending traditional Taiwanese street food flavors with a popular American dish.
Panda Express collaborated with Taiwanese American designer Frankie Gaw of Little Fat Boy to mark the launch, with Gaw designing a collector bucket inspired by his Taiwanese roots and childhood movie theater nostalgia.
The dish features dark meat chicken coated in extra-crispy breading tossed in a spice blend of tamarind, tomato, garlic, and onion, served with house-made Chili Crisp Aioli and fried kale.
Customers can order the chicken as a standard entrée on any Bowl, Plate, or Family Meal without extra charges, or as a large a la carte order to receive a free pail; Michigan locations do not currently carry it.
Culinary innovation director Adrian Lok noted the recipe draws inspiration from Hot and Sour Soup flavors, as Panda Express uses this limited release to collect guest feedback before determining potential future expansions.
