Palestinian Man Shot Dead While Climbing West Bank Barrier Into Israel in Search of Work
His brother said the father of four crossed the wall to work in Israel as access tightened after the Oct. 7, 2023 attack.
On Tuesday evening, Palestinian authorities reported that Israeli police shot and killed Zakaria Qatusa, 44, as he attempted to climb the concrete barrier separating the West Bank from Jerusalem near Al-Ram.
Brother Khalid Qatusa stated the father of 4 was attempting to enter Israel for work, saying he felt forced to resort to this method as there was no other opportunity to support his household.
Since Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, access has been sharply restricted, driving increasing numbers of Palestinians from the West Bank to attempt illegal crossings for work in recent years.
Mourners gathered in the West Bank town of Deir Qadis on Wednesday for Qatusa's funeral, while separately, mourners in al-Lubban al-Sharqiya held services for Yousef Kaabnah, 16, killed by Israeli army fire.
