UK Bookstores Scramble as Sally Rooney's Novels Pulled ...
Faber said UK law bars it from passing on royalties after Rooney pledged them to Palestine Action, and her books have sold 2.3 million copies in the UK.
On Wednesday, publisher Faber stopped supplying Irish author Sally Rooney's books in the UK, citing legal concerns over her financial support for Palestine Action, a group the government proscribed as a terrorist organization in July 2025.
The UK government outlawed Palestine Action in July 2025, making membership or financial support a criminal offense punishable by up to 14 years in prison as the group targets companies providing military support to Israel.
Faber stated that UK law prevents it from passing on Rooney's earnings; the author agreed, saying "I am wholly prepared to accept the consequences" regarding her beliefs and intentions.
The Booksellers Association confirmed distributors have run out of stock, while bookseller Lucy Burke at Camden Town Bookshop described the situation as "absolutely ridiculous" and a form of censorship of "one of our most prominent writers."
Palestine Action continues to challenge the terror designation, with the group's lawyers set to ask the Supreme Court to quash the ban during a hearing scheduled for November 4 and 5 next month.
