Armando Iannucci Signs up to Write Paddington 4
Armando Iannucci and Simon Blackwell join the screenplay as Studiocanal builds on a franchise with more than $800 million in global box office.
- On Tuesday, Variety reported Emmy-winning and Oscar-nominated screenwriter Armando Iannucci, 62, and Simon Blackwell, 60, have signed to write Paddington 4 for Studiocanal, bringing two creators best known for Veep and The Thick of It to the beloved franchise.
- The hiring follows Studiocanal CEO and Canal+ Chief Content Officer Anna Marsh's announcement at CinemaCon earlier this year that "world-renowned comedy writers" had joined the $700 million box office franchise.
- Iannucci created the iconic TV character Alan Partridge, won BAFTA for Best Comedy Programme in 1998, and co-wrote In the Loop, which earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. Blackwell created Breeders and Back, and co-wrote The Personal History of David Copperfield, which starred Ben Whishaw, the voice of Paddington.
- Separately, award-winning director Dougal Wilson, who made his feature debut with Paddington in Peru, is reportedly in talks to return as director, though Studiocanal has not yet confirmed the arrangement.
- The franchise has grown into a global juggernaut, with the first three films earning over $800 million worldwide, and Studiocanal is targeting a 2027 or 2028 release that could mark Paddington's 70th anniversary.
